Reflections on Shabat 23d Feb 2024

We see our solar system in the picture and the starry sky in the background. Since the seventh fruit of the Spirit is a double fruit: faith & faithfulness, I will briefly discuss them separately and together. Also called the father of faith, Abram represents man's faith, that is, trust in the Creator's promises at its best. The earth and the starry sky represent our Creator's faithfulness to all His chosen ones.

  What is faith?

It is keeping the teachings and promises given in the Bible true and also living according to them in practice, according to the amount of faith that has been granted to each believer in Adonai Yeshua. The amount of our faith increases as we walk with our Savior.

According to faith, reaching out means making big decisions of faith that have a revolutionary effect on our life after the decision! It's about choices such as profession and related studies, friends, workplace, place of residence and possible spouse.

It is especially important to pray to find a soberly functioning community of believers where you can grow healthily under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The believer should strive to be ready to accept the spiritual tasks that he feels the Holy Spirit has given him, whether they are serving the home congregation or going to the missionary field.

Adonai Yeshua is the originator and finisher of our faith: Hebr. 12:1-2
>>1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, we must get rid of every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and run with endurance the race set out for us, 2 keeping our eyes fixed on Yeshua, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. For the joy set out for him he endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of Elohim.<<

  What is faithfulness?

In relation to the service work of believers, it means the desire to make an effort and act in precisely those tasks that the Holy Spirit has assigned to each believer. Do not neglect tasks that may seem trivial. It is good to remember Adonai Yeshua's promise: Matt. 25:21

>>His master answered, 'Well done, good and faithful slave! You have been faithful in a few things. I will put you in charge of many things. Enter into the joy of your master.'<<

It is very important to note that this is about the payment of wages beyond the limit of time, i.e. in eternity, and it concerns the servant acting faithfully in the tasks that Adonai Yeshua has entrusted to him. During a long religious life, there may be several tasks.

I have observed such a general phenomenon that in many congregations there is an unhealthy striving for prestigious positions, even though the aspirant lacks the prerequisites and sufficient life experience. The teaching of the apostle Paul warns against this: Rom. 12:16
>>Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not vain glory, but associate with those who are humble. Be not wise in your own conceits.<<

If a believer feels that he and his abilities are not taken into account, I recommend first self-examination and prayer. If you still feel the same, then it is worth discussing the matter in the congregation one-on-one with the leader of the congregation or a parent leading brother. If the feedback is inappropriate and humiliating, then it is wise get out of there and join to another congregation. Otherwise, the believer becomes bitter and his spiritual growth is hindered.

It is good for a believer to join the local congregation. But perhaps at some point it turns out to be unhealthy and some heresy has gained power there. Then it is necessary to pray - preferably with the help of the gift of tongues - for help and guidance that there is a reason to part with it? If so, then one should leave it and pray that which congregation or group of believers should he join after that?

I told that last lesson from my own experience. If I had stayed in the congregation, where I did join on, I would have grown up spiritually crooked, my faith would have been distorted and I would have finally become a member of sectarian! Sectarians cannot inherit the Kingdom of Elohim!

How are faith & faithfulness related?

A believer in Adonai Yeshua wants to be faithful because he knows that he is Adonai's co-worker and that his work is infinitely valuable! Valuable because he guides those without faith to find a saving faith and he assists other believers to grow from a shared faith. Genuine faith is a prerequisite for faithfulness.

As for faithfulness in married life, it is already necessary for the believer's own salvation, and it is also an absolute condition for Adonai Yeshua to be able to use him as an intermediary in spreading the message of salvation. I have seen too many believers working in leadership positions divorce their spouses.

When a believer grows old, exhausted by various diseases and when his physical condition declines decisively, it is good to be kind to himself as well. So we should also love and have mercy on ourselves. Since Adonai is not a slave whip, let's not be like that towards ourselves and our neighbors! However, it is good for us to always encourage each other to love and good deeds, as long as we have enough strength and resources!

Yehowah's faithfulness is our strong security!

He gave his chosen people the following sure promise of his own faithfulness to them: Jer. 31:37
>>So says Yehowah, If the heavens above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth below can be searched out, I will also reject all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, declares Yehowah.<<

The same promise applies to all the elect of the New Covenant, regardless of their ethnic background, if only we believe in him and trust in his faithfulness. Since Adonai Yeshua is the originator of faith and its perfecter, and since we are children of the faithful Elohim, let us ask Yeshua for faith and learn more faithfulness from Elohim!

Reflections on Shabat 16th Feb 2024

We see a default picture of collecting manna. It was what the entire nation of Israel was allowed to eat every day for about 40 years as they wandered towards the land promised to the descendants of their ancestors. The manna was a symbol of Adonai's goodness to his chosen people.

When did Israel enter the land of Canaan?

The Israelites arrived in the Promised Land under the leadership of Joshua after wandering in the wilderness for 40 years. According to the Bible, this old promise was fulfilled in 2708 after the creation of Adam, i.e. around 1318 BCE. Adonai had first promised it to Abraham and confirmed it to Isaac and Jacob several hundred years before the promise was fulfilled. (I have self counted these years with help of the Bible)

How has Adonai's goodness been realized?

A) Regarding Israel:

In that he has kept his promises to his chosen ones and protected his chosen people over the millennia, even though the Devil has sought to destroy them numerous times, most recently in the Holocaust in the last century. He has gathered Israelis in the land of their fathers after about 1900 years of exile and Israel got the status of an independent state.

On November 29, 1947, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution on the establishment of a Jewish state in the land of Israel.

Trusting in the Almighty, the signatories of the Declaration of Independence confirmed that resolution at a session of the Provisional Government of the State on the soil of their homeland in the city of Tel-Aviv on the Sabbath evening, the fifth day of the month Iljar 5708, the fourteenth day of May 1948.

It was then that the prophecies of many Tanakh prophets (e.g. Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Zechariah) were fulfilled, as well as the wonderful promise given by our Savior Adonai Yeshua that Jerusalem will be trampled by the Gentiles (only until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled). Luke 21:21-27

>>21 Then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. Those who are inside the city must depart. Those who are out in the country must not enter it, 22 because these are days of vengeance, to fulfill all that is written.

23 Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing their babies in those days! For there will be great distress on the earth and wrath against this people. 24 They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led away as captives among all nations. Jerusalem will be trampled down by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

25 "And there will be signs in the sun and moon and stars, and on the earth nations will be in distress, anxious over the roaring of the sea and the surging waves. 26 People will be fainting from fear and from the expectation of what is coming on the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 Then they will see the Son of Man arriving in a cloud with power and great glory.
<<

B) Promise also for other nations:

The salvation message of Adonai Yeshua's victory has been proclaimed for almost 2000 years to all nations on earth, as many prophets of the Tanakh, starting with Moses, have promised in advance. Among the prophets, Isaiah has promised this most clearly in many of his verses.
Isa. 49:5-6

>>5 So now the Yehowah says, the one who formed me from birth to be his servant - he did this to restore Jacob to himself, so that Israel might be gathered to him; and I will be honored in the Yehowah's sight, for my Elohim is my source of strength -

6 he says, "Is it too insignificant a task for you to be my servant, to reestablish the tribes of Jacob, and restore the remnant of Israel? I will make you a light to the nations, so you can bring my deliverance to the remote regions of the earth."<<

C) Moreover, this promise concerning all nations:

>>Pay attention to me, my people! Listen to me, my nation! For I will issue a decree, I will make my justice a light to the nations.<< Isa. 51:4

A memory of scorning my good deed

I once took the pastries I bought from the delicatessen department to my friends as a party favor. My friends' children, around 5 years old, ran to the tray and took them, without any kind of table manners instruction. Then they shouted: "Hey, this tastes bad!" I wondered about their parents, who didn't say a word, even though the pastries were tasty(?)

The incident reminded me of the Israelites' anger against their Creator. Numb. 11:5-6
>>"5 We remember the fish we used to eat freely in Egypt, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic. 6 But now we are dried up, and there is nothing at all before us except this manna!"<< I understand that, remembering well the feelings of our Creator towards his ungrateful people.

So let us gratefully accept everything that is given to us from above, because it is for our good, even if it just then 'doesn't taste delicious'.

Yeshua HaMashiach is the Good Shepherd

>>10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come so that they may have life, and may have it abundantly. 11 "I am the Good Shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

12 The hired hand, who is not a Shepherd and does not own sheep, sees the wolf coming and abandons the sheep and runs away. So the wolf attacks the sheep and scatters them. 13 Because he is a hired hand and is not concerned about the sheep, he runs away.

14 "I am the Good Shepherd. I know my own and my own know me - 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father - and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 I have other sheep that do not come from this sheepfold. I must bring them too, and they will listen to my voice, so that there will be one flock and one Shepherd.<<

The saying 'the Good Shepherd' refers to the verses of Isa. 40:10-11, Ezek. 34:11-12 and Psalm 23

Reflections on Shabat 9th Feb 2024

In the picture we see ripe figs. Together with fresh water, I think that
they both are good for showing
kindness to a starving person.

What the Bible teach us of kindness?

When we read the Tanakh (OT), we notice how important
fresh water was for the Israelites and their cattle while wandering in the wilderness. Giving it to a thirsty person was a very kind act and could save a starving life!

Figs have also had a great symbolic meaning in relation to kindness. For example, during King David's time, figs were brought to his soldiers, and David himself gave a piece of bread, fig cake and fresh water to the starving Egyptian described in the picture above.

How do we learn to be kind?

We should deal with the problems of our neighbors as if they were our own. Then compassion and empathy awaken in our heart and we want to help them as much as we can. The Holy Spirit guides us to be kind even to our enemies, if only we keep our spiritual ears open.

How important it is to be kind?

It is very important especially in connection with the proclamation of the Salvation Message and helps the listener to receive it for the salvation of his soul. If the listener finds us nice and pleasant, it opens their heart to be receptive to our speech.

I remembered an incident when I worked as a design consultant at Volvo PV's Head Office in Gothenburg in 1985-90. One morning the Irish consultants organized a fun test for us. Everyone had to choose their favorite from the pre-printed texts on cardboard and keep it visible on their desk all week. They contained various aphorisms.

I chose one that read: "It is nice to be important, but it is more important to be nice!" My boss laughed when he saw it. He chose a sign that read: "The boss loves idiots." One member of our group was offended by that and came to whisper in my ear: "You can tell who the boss loves, because he has hired only idiots into this group." For example, he mentioned a woman, whom I liked.

I replied to the guy: "Really? But hasn't he hired you too?" I couldn't hold back my laughter then. The boss in question was
apparently listening to our conversation. When the guy noticed it, he immediately left me with shame on his face. Only after the guy left did I notice that the boss had perhaps listened to our conversation(?)

Kindness always pays off!

Related to the previous one, our group at Volvo PV consisted of very special people. Each of us was different and talented in our own way, whom our boss had deliberately chosen from the applicants to complement each other.

One was a smart Polish woman who was a staunch Roman Catholic. One young man had attended a Steiner school and had a good creative ability to invent something new. The best of us was unusually precise in the design work and, in addition, talented, hardworking and really exceptionally wise and empathetic!

Unfortunately, he was openly homosexual. Most of the team members looked at him with envy because the boss gave him the most prestigious jobs. I was not jealous, but showed him kindness instead. The precision work I got was enough for me and I was successful in it because I always prayed for help from above.

I didn't think it was right to start criticizing his gayness, because I knew that many people had drifted into that sin due to the combined effect of many different factors. That's why I showed him unconditional love as if I hadn't even noticed his gayness at all!

You see, I had a beautiful poster of a smiling baby boy sitting on a big sunflower with his arms outstretched towards the sky on the wall of the large landscape office, in my own workspace. Below the poster was the following text in Swedish and translated from it:

"But to all who have received him - those who believe in his name - he has given the right to become Elohim's children." John 1:12

After four and a half years, it happened that our boss was promoted to one of leaders of the most ambitious design project, and our new boss was a man from Saab Scania, Trollhättan. The new boss was openly hostile towards me and tried to remove me from the group in front of everyone.

What was extraordinary was that he said in front of everyone that he was unable to treat me kindly(?) Then I understood that the evil spirit in him caused him to behave like that and I saw that he was really ashamed of his behavior! I began to pray for his salvation at home and silently in my heart at work during coffee and lunch breaks.

When the aforementioned gay found out that I was the target of unwarranted hatred, he went to our previous manager and asked him to hire me as a consulting designer in that most sought-after group, where the latest Volvo passenger car model 850 was being designed. The boss gladly took me there and my working period there was one of the best in my entire working life!

The new boss was also very sick. His diabetes was already very advanced and he had to take an insulin spike in his arm several times a day. In the opinion of the team members, he was no longer physically healthy enough to function in the demanding task we were working on in the Quality and Development department. I hadn't talked to him about faith at all, because when he saw my poster above my desk, it was like a red garment to him. Holding posters was completely normal and allowed in the landscape office.

So something had happened in the heart of that young gay man, because he showed me extraordinary kindness after the kindness he had received from me. I did hope and pray that Adonai Yeshua'll pay that him. Our boss kept in touch with me until his death. That is, about 25 years after the Holy Spirit had led me to a new job, in Finland.

When the boss died, according to his daughter, it turned out that the boss only had contact information for me out of all his hundreds of coworkers. I got an email from her. After all, I had prayed for the boss and sent him Christian literature and told him about the Salvation message. I sent his daughter a beautiful letter of condolence.

Reflections on Shabat 2d Feb 2024

In my opinion, in the Bible the fourth fruit of the Spirit - patience - is represented by the grains of the field, which must be diligently cultivated and patiently wait for rains and sunshine. It has been a lifeline for people in the agricultural era and still is worldwide.

Patience is a fruit of the Spirit

In the list of fruits of the spirit, the fourth fruit is patience. We don't have it innately and that's why we have to strive for it. That is why Adonai leads us to situations where we can learn patience and get it more. The Greek word 'makrothymia' used in the verse means: 'long-suffering' and 'patience'.

Long-suffering is the primary attribute of the word 'love' (1 Cor. 13:4) and love is mentioned as the first fruit of the Spirit, so I don't use word 'long-suffering'. English Bible translations generally use the word 'patience'
.

In the life of those who believe in Adonai Yeshua, the same phenomenon occurs as in a wheat field: the grain grows and ripens until it is ripe for cutting. Ripening happens gradually. Similarly, as a fruit of the Spirit, patience grows in us over the years. It appears, for example, when waiting for the bus to arrive. As children, we were impatient if the bus was a little late. As adults, we don't get depressed, even if the bus doesn't come at all!

A special memory

I worked as a volunteer at Kibbutz Kiryat Anavim in the spring winter of January and February in 1977. I was informed quite late about the return flight and I only had 4 hours to say goodbye to my colleagues, eat dinner, hand over my stuff, pack my things and leave for Jerusalem, from where there was a bus departure at 8pm for Lydda Airport in Jerusalem.

My best friends came to escort me to the kibbutz bus stop. The bus was supposed to come at 6pm, but it never did, which is not uncommon in Israel. When it was already 7.30 pm, one clever Christian sister said: "Now, Lefa, you have a great opportunity to act like Abraham our father of faith. Look at the clear starry sky and in faith pick one star of promise from there."

I replied, "Thanks for the advice, I'll do that." I chose a bright star saying, "May that star be a promise from Adonai to me tonight. Thank you Adonai !" Having said that, we saw someone driving his car at a high speed, zig-zagging down from the direction of the Kibbutz Hotel. The mountainside was so steep that the road had to wind back and forth.

I hitchhiked and the car stopped. It was a black taxi driven by an Arab born in Bethlehem. A young Swedish couple came along from the same bus stop and when we talked in English about faith in Adonai Yeshua, the Arab was happy and said that since we are Christians like him, he will take us to Jerusalem for half price.

I didn't even have money for the normal taxi fare: 22 shekels, but exactly what my share of the trip cost: 11 shekels! There were only 30 agoras left in coins. I made it to Jerusalem on time in front of the luxury hotel Eyal at 7.55pm. I still remember how the Finnish tour guide there said: "Oh! You made it at the very last minute." From there I traveled by bus on time to Lydda Airport, Tel Aviv. The bus fee was included in the plane ticket.

Patiently waiting for Adonai Yeshua

Let us be faithful and patient as we await the second coming of our Savior Adonai Yeshua! The apostle Paul also urged us to do this: Titus 2:11-14

" 11 For the grace of Elohim has appeared, bringing salvation to all people. 12 It trains us to reject godless ways and worldly desires and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, 13 as we wait for the happy fulfillment of our hope in the glorious appearing of our great Elohim and Savior, Yeshua HaMashiach.

14 He gave himself for us to set us free from every kind of lawlessness and to purify for himself a people who are truly his, who are eager to do good."

Reflections on shabat, November 21, 2025

Let us review those verses as an introduction: " Mine eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me. He t...
